What is MP4 Format

MP4 or MPEG-4 Part 14(formally ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003) is a multimedia container format standard specified as a part of MPEG-4. It may also be referred to as MPEG-4 AVC, which stands for Advanced Video Coding. As the name suggests, this is a format for working with video files and was first introduced in 1998. The MPEG refers to Motion Pictures Expert Group who is responsible for setting the industry standards regarding digital audio and video.

MP4 allows a combination of audio, video, subtitles and still images to be held in the one single file. It also allows for advanced content such as 3D graphics, menus and user interactivity.

An MP4 file uses separate compression schemes for audio and video. Video is compressed by using the MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264), MPEG-4 Part 2, MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 encoding algorithm, while the audio is compressed in  AAC compression format. But since MP4 is a container format, it can also contain an MPEG-2 AAC or an MP3 bit stream. These different formats are given in the header of an MP4 file, specifying the exact object types in the container.

The MP4 container format can be used by iTunes, and with all portable devices, like: iPhone, iPod, iPad, PS3(PSP), Zune, Android Phones, etc. And it can be played back with many softwares, like: KMPlayer, Media Player Classic,  MPlayer, QuickTime Player, VLC media player, Windows Media Player 12, XBMC Media Center, etc.

How to Convert VOB files to MP4?

1. What is VOB format?
A VOB file (Video Object) is a container format in DVD-Video media. It can contain video, audio, subtitle, menu and navigation contents multiplexed together into a stream form.
Except VOB file, there are other DVD files include IFO and BUP files. IFO (Info) files contain all the information a DVD player needs to know about a DVD so that the user can navigate and play all DVD content properly. BUP (Backup) files are an exact copy and backup of IFO files in case of corruption. VOB files without IFO or BUP files do not allow DVD menu navigation. Images, video and audio used in DVD menus are stored in VOB files.

Why My iMovie Can Not Read AVI

Import the AVI files to iMovie from Sony digital camera, flip video camera, or some AVI movies downloaded from the Internet, can be a painful experience for many Mac users. Because we will usually get into some troubles, like it played well in  Quicktime, but when importing to iMovie, it just goes through the copying process, but nothing showed up in the screen. Or imported it into iMovie, but without sound or image.

How does it happened? Because the iMovie can only reads AVI files that both the audio and the video were compressed by using a codec that it can recognized. If iMovie can' t recognize your AVI video files, that would be the codec used to create the AVI file is not supported by iMovie, even if you have installed Perian, a component that can let you play AVI files in QuickTime.

So if you want to edit AVI files in iMovie, the easiest way would be converting them to an iMovie compatible format.
